Italy has been involved in many conflicts since the times of the Romans. In the 20th century, a number of battles were fought in Italy, during both World Wars. In World War I, battles were fought in the northern, mountainous part of Italy. During harsh weather conditions, trenches were built in the snow. In World War II, Allied troops landed in Sicily before proceeding north. It is possible to visit many of the battlefields today.
