According to the United States Embassy to the Ukraine, American citizens are not required to have a Ukrainian visa if their stay in the country is strictly for the purpose of tourism and does not exceed 90 days. The embassy recommends that visitors staying for durations longer then 90 days contact the Ukrainian consulate in the United States to verify what kind of visa, if any, is required given the particular nature of their visit.

All American citizens over the age of 16 are required to display a valid U.S. passport when entering the country. Passports are considered valid for at least one month beyond a visitor's estimated return date. Registration is completed on arrival at the border by border control officers. Passport registration in the Ukraine is not valid for travel to the Russian Federation, Poland, Slovakia or any other state bordering the country.
All visitors to Ukraine, regardless of nationality, are required by Ukrainian law to obtain mandatory health insurance. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, this law is in place to ensure that foreign citizens receive high-quality medical assistance in the event of an emergency. The cost of this insurance, purchased through the state joint-stock insurance company "Ukrinmedstrach," is contingent on the length of a foreigner's stay in Ukraine. Prices range from approximately $2 stays of five days to $95 for stays of up to a year.
