The Best Places to Travel in Europe in October

October is the shoulder season for most of Europe, when the peak season tourist crowds of summer have dissipated across the continent. There's still a lot going on though, and some places are even more crowded in October, due to the numerous festivals and events. Here are a few of the best places in the EU to visit at this time of year.
  1. Oktoberfest in Munich

    • Drink in the celebration at the original Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. Thousands upon thousands converge over a 16-day period to bask in all things Bavarian, namely beer and food. Oktoberfest in Munich actually begins in September but carries over into the month of October. Entry to the festival is free, but the beer and food aren't.

    The Cinque Terre

    • Hike the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera. October is the beginning of the off-season for this string of five ancient fishing villages along the Mediterranean connected by a hiking trail, but that just makes it better. The summer hordes thin out but the temperatures are mild, which makes it a perfect time to visit. The villages are small, pretty and free of traffic, as visitors aren't allowed to bring cars into the towns. There is a train that connects the villages for those who don't feel like walking the trail.

    Spain

    • Head for the festivals and coasts of Spain. According to the United Nations Tourist Organization, Spain is the second-most visited country in Europe and there are some major activities that occur here in October. Take in the Fiestas del Pilar, a weeklong event in the city of Zaragoza that culminates with a grand celebration on October 12th. Mundaka, on Spain's northern coast, is a major stop on the Association of Surfing Professional's World Tour every October.
