The Best Places to Travel in California

There is so much to see and do in California that it really rates more than one visit, or perhaps a very long stay, to do justice to the many interesting attractions. The California adventure that awaits visitors varies from natural scenery and historical landmarks, to shopping, cuisine and entertainment to suit every age and interest.

  1. Muir Woods

    • The San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California offers international dining, shopping and accommodation, and a wide array of sightseeing options, from Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli Square to Golden Gate Park and the Golden Gate Bridge. There are also natural wonders to enjoy like the Muir Woods National Monument in Mill Valley. Explore six miles of trails at Muir Woods. Besides the magnificent and world famous redwood trees, there are plants and animals for which this expanse of old growth redwood forest is a natural habitat. Check the Muir Woods website (see Resources) for details of fee free weekends and special events, and download the official map and guide. There is also website information about nearby attractions like Stinson Beach and Alcatraz Island. No picnicking, pets, bicycles, smoking or camping are allowed at Muir Woods. However, there is a picnic area at Muir Beach, about three miles away.

    Gold Panning, Casinos

    • Visitors to California can go for the gold, literally. Panning for gold can be quite an adventure, especially considering the history of the California Gold Rush when many a fortune was made. There are no guarantees, of course, but it can be a lot of fun, especially for a family or group, and who knows but a member of your party may strike gold. See Resources for a list of where and how to pan for gold, and other attractions in the various counties. Wineries, farmers' markets and Gold Rush historical sites like Daffodil Hill in Amador County are other special attractions to visit. Be sure to check schedules beforehand, because not all these attractions are open year-round.There is also the option of striking it rich in one or more of California's Indian casinos, like the Red Hawk Casino in Placerville, with over 2,000 slot machines and an entirely non-smoking lower level, plus a host of dining choices from sandwiches and pastries to Prime Rib and fine wines. See the Resources section for details of Indian casinos in California.

    Disney, Universal, Hollywood

    • Consider holidays to places like Disneyland, Universal Studios and Hollywood to experience part of the magic of Southern California. Who could travel there without visiting at least one of these famous attractions? Anaheim was where Walt Disney fulfilled his original Disneyland dream in 1955. See how this theme park has grown to include the original Disneyland Park; plus California Adventure with four different lands; and Downtown Disney with restaurants, shops and cinemas. At Disneyland Park, Main Street hosts "Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln." There is Fantasyland with "It's A Small World" and Mickey's Toontown. At Universal Studios Hollywood, thrill to park rides, and a studio tour to learn how movies and TV shows are made, including actual sets and special effects secrets. Dedicated shoppers and fans should not miss Rodeo Drive with its brand name stores, and Grauman's Chinese Theatre to make comparisons with hand and foot prints of the stars preserved for posterity.
