Which country formally rulled iceland?
Iceland was formally ruled by Denmark from 1380 to 1944, when it became an independent republic. During the 13th century, Iceland had been a self-governing commonwealth under the Norwegian crown. In 1380, Norway entered into a personal union with Denmark, and Iceland was thereby brought under Danish rule. Iceland remained under Danish control for over 500 years, although it retained a degree of autonomy. In 1918, Iceland became an independent kingdom within the Danish realm. In 1944, Iceland declared its full independence from Denmark and became a republic.
