Why the distance between India and Europe has been reduced by 7000 km with opening of Suez canal?

The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 did not reduce the distance between India and Europe by 7000 km. It shortened the sea route between the two regions by approximately 7000 nautical miles (12,964 km).
