Switzerland Has No Vice President—It Has a Rotating Federal Council Presidency
Switzerland does not have a Vice President.** Instead, it has a **seven-member Federal Council (Bundesrat / Conseil fédéral / Consiglio federale / Cussegl federal)** — the **collective head of state and government**.
How the Presidency Works
- One-year term:** **Federal Council elects a President and Vice President** from among its members **each December** for the following calendar year.
- Rotation by seniority:** **Longest-serving member who hasn't been President** typically becomes Vice President, then President next year. **Convention, not law.**
- President = Chair + Representative:** **Presides over Council meetings, represents Switzerland abroad (state visits, UNGA), receives credentials** — **but NO veto, NO policy authority beyond colleagues**.
- Vice President = Deputy:** **Steps in if President incapacitated** — otherwise regular minister.
