Activities in Sonoma, California

Sonoma is a city in a valley named Sonoma, located in a county with the same name. When most people talk about Sonoma, they usually mean the sprawling county. Nestled in the Northern California region known as "Wine Country", Sonoma has plenty of activities, especially if you enjoy exploring. It's also a good jumping point into nearby Napa Valley, St. Helena, Marin County and other nearby areas. The whole county includes many small towns. Visitors to Sonoma marvel at the beauty of the region's rolling green hills, many of which are lined with vineyards, and mountains in the near distance. Almost any time of year, visiting Sonoma is a pleasant experience.
  1. Outdoor Activities

    • Fishing, boating, kayaking and canoeing are excellent choices for this region; check Jenner and Bodega Bay for those, as well as beach combing and whale watching. Horseback riding takes you into forests and along secluded trails. You can rent bikes in Santa Rosa, Cotati, Windsor and Sebastopol. Lake Sonoma has a fish hatchery and visitor's center with local details. Trail hiking can be found in a number of places. Check Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, Stillwater Cove and Annadel State Park. With appealing vistas in every direction, try to allow time to see as much outdoors as possible.

    Museums and the Arts

    • Cinnabar Theater (cinnabartheater.org) in Petaluma offers music, theatre and comedy year round. Silver Moon Theatre (silvermoontheatre.org) in the city of Sonoma offers several plays a year. The annual Sonoma Valley Film Festival attracts tourists and celebrities alike, and the annual Jazz Festival each spring has attracted Harry Connick, Jr., Bozz Scaggs and other stars. The Charles M. Schulz Museum (schulzmuseum.org) in Santa Rosa honors the creator of Charlie Brown and friends; he lived in Sonoma for nearly 40 years. You can also find film, plays and musical venues throughout the remaining towns of Sonoma, some of which offer historic shows.

    Dining and Nightlife

    • River Rock Casino in Geyserville, on the Dry Creek Rancheria of the Pomo Indians, offers dining and entertainment as well as the customary casino activities. A smattering of small breweries countywide offer food and locally-made beverages. Check out Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol or Stout Brothers Irish Pub & Restaurant in Santa Rosa. Aubergine in Sebastopol has live music most nights of the week.

    Wineries and Farms

    • Vineyards, vineyards, vineyards. They're everywhere and the wineries that go with them feature whites, reds and everything in between. Sonoma Valley features a few wineries with caves or underground settings, too. Many of the wineries request a small tasting fee if you plan to try their variations. Several honey farms and apple orchards dot the area, and there are cheese factories that offer locally made cheeses and other items. Look for various tour options, or drive through the countryside with a wineries and farms map.
