The Benbow Hotel and Resort (benbowinn.com) allows hotel and non-hotel guests to hit the tees on its nine-hole golf course. While the course only has nine holes, each fairway has two tees, which allows golfers to play an 18-hole round. Benbow Hotel also provides a golf pro shop with golfing apparel -- gloves, shoes and visors -- and equipment -- clubs and golf balls. Golfers may also rent clubs and golf carts at the pro shop. The golf course also provides a putting green, driving cage and convenience store, which sells drinks for golfers during their round.
Garberville features two parks for RV camping, Richardson Grove Campground & RV Park and Benbow RV Resort. Richardson Grove is a Christian-themed campground and features 85 RV campsites. All RV sites have water, sewer and electric hook-ups. Facilities at this campground include a chapel -- which is only reserved for church groups -- camping cabins and a general store with RV supplies and groceries. Benbow RV Resort has 112 campsites for RVs; each site has water, electrical and sewage hook-ups. A convenience store is available on Benbow's property; the store sells RV supplies and groceries. Benbow has shower facilities.
Southern Humboldt Fitness (no website; 1150 Evergreen Road; Garberville, CA 95542; 707-923-2443) is in eastern Garberville, right off the Redwood Highway. This fitness center features free weights, aerobics machines -- stationary bicycles and treadmills -- and a tanning salon. Physical trainer sessions are available upon request. For yoga activities, Garberville offers Sohum Yoga (sohumyoga.com). This yoga center provides classes in various yoga styles, including Svaroopa, Ashtanga and Kundalini. Sohum also offers prenatal yoga classes for pregnant women, and women with newborn children may take "Mommie and Me" classes, which offer babysitting services while mothers work out. Yoga classes and retreats are also available at the Heartwood Institute (heartwoodinstitute.com) in eastern Garberville.
Garberville is within 30 minutes of parks such as Tooby Memorial Park, Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Benbow Lake State Recreation Area. All of these parks provide hiking trails and picnicking areas. During the winter, Benbow Lake State Recreation Area offers fishing opportunities for salmon and steelhead. Kayaking, swimming and horseback riding activities are available in the summer at the 17,000-acre Humboldt Redwoods State Park (humboldtredwoods.org), approximately 20 minutes north of Garberville.
