How does the size of Ireland compare to a US state?

The island of Ireland has a total area of about 32,595 square miles (84,287 square kilometers), making it somewhat larger than the US state of West Virginia and somewhat smaller than the state of Maine. Ireland is the third-largest island in Europe, after Great Britain and Iceland. Northern Ireland makes up around a sixth of the total island acreage (6 counties out of 32 in the entire nation) and has an area of 5,461 square miles (14,141 square kilometers), which is quite similar to the size of the US state of Connecticut.
