St. Nicholas Burial Site: Myra, Turkey — Not Ireland

There is no historical or archaeological evidence placing St. Nicholas's burial in Ireland.

The 4th-century Bishop of Myra died c. 343 AD and was interred in his cathedral, the Church of St. Nicholas in Myra (modern Demre, Antalya Province, Turkey).

Relic Translation

  • 1087: Italian sailors from Bari stole major relics → Basilica di San Nicola, Bari, Italy.
  • 1099/1100: Venetian sailors took remaining fragments → San Nicolò al Lido, Venice.
  • Minor relics distributed across Europe (including possibly Ireland centuries later), but the primary tomb remains in Demre.

The Irish connection likely stems from later medieval relic dispersal or confusion with local saints. The saint's historical tomb is unequivocally in Turkey.
