What does Galway mean?

Galway is an anglicisation of the Irish word Gaillimh, which is derived from the name of the Galway River, which flows through the city. The river's name is thought to be derived from the Old Irish word gal-, meaning 'rocky', and liamh, meaning 'elm'. The name Galway is therefore thought to mean "rocky river with elm trees".
