Groundhog Day originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Imbolc, which was celebrated on February 1st. During Imbolc, people would light bonfires to ward off evil spirits and welcome the coming spring. It was also believed that if a hedgehog (or its American equivalent, a groundhog) saw its shadow on this day, winter would last for six more weeks.
