How to Plan a Trip to Ireland

Ireland is renowned for its beauty, history, friendly folk and traditions. The "Emerald Isle" is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Here's how to plan a trip to Ireland.

Instructions

  1. Find Accommodations in Ireland

    • 1

All types of accommodations are listed on the Tourism Ireland Web site (see Resources below). You can view photos of each property along with contact information, star rating and a detailed description, though you can't book online.

    • 2

Choose a bed and breakfast vacation. Irish B&Bs are plentiful--there are even special directories for these often quaint and friendly lodgings. Some bed and breakfasts carry a surprisingly steep price tag, however, so choose wisely.

    • 3

You'll find luxury hotels in the larger cities and cottages for rent all over the country. Even the smallest villages will typically have several lodging options.

    Getting Around Ireland

    • 4

Fly into Dublin or Shannon airports. Dublin, the capital, is most common, but many vacationers fly directly to West Ireland and Shannon, which is adjacent to Limerick.

    • 5

Travel by rail or by car. Rail is fastest and easiest, but a car will allow you more freedom. Most Americans choose to drive, though the driving regulations require you to keep to the left side of the road. You must be at least 23 years of age to rent a car in Ireland.

    Know Your Destination

    • 6

Get out in the countryside. The emerald hills of Ireland enjoy very little traffic and road travel is virtually never a problem.

    • 7

Drive out to County Leitrim or Enniskillen in the west.

    • 8

Discover ancient treasures amid thousand-year old abbeys and castles, like the Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle, which are stunning.
