Guatemala's history stretches back to ancient Mesoamerican civilizations (Maya, etc.) that flourished for millennia. However, as a modern sovereign nation-state, Guatemala was formally established on September 15, 1821, when it declared independence from Spain.
As of 2021, the Republic of Guatemala is 200 years old as an independent country.
