What Cinco de Mayo Celebrates Beyond the Battle of Puebla

Cinco de Mayo (May 5) commemorates the 1862 Mexican victory over French forces at Puebla, but in practice it has grown into a broader celebration:

1. Mexican Cultural Heritage – Music (mariachi, norteño), dance (folklórico), food (tacos, mole, tamales), art, and language pride, especially in Mexican-American communities.
2. Resilience & Resistance – Symbol of an outnumbered, under-equipped force defeating a global power; embraced as a metaphor for overcoming adversity.
3. Community & Identity – Parades, festivals, school events, and family gatherings reinforce Mexican identity in the U.S. and abroad.

Note: It is not Mexican Independence Day (that's Sep 16). The 1917 Constitution promulgation (Feb 5) is a separate holiday.
