Ethnic Identity for Mixed Mexican and Black Heritage

There is no single prescribed label. Individuals self-identify based on family, community, appearance, and personal meaning. Common terms:

• Afro-Mexican / Afro-Mexicano – Embraces African ancestry within Mexican context; recognized in Mexico's 2020 census.
• Mestizo – Traditionally European+Indigenous; some extend to any mixed heritage.
• Blaxican – Colloquial blend of Black + Mexican; used in U.S. Chicano/Black communities.
• Multiracial / Mixed – Census categories; broad.
• Mexican-American / African-American – National/ethnic hyphenates.
• Latino / Hispanic – Pan-ethnic; may or may not reflect racial identity.

Identity is fluid; many use multiple labels situationally. Respect self-identification.
