Using US Dollars in Nicaragua: What You Need to Know

Nicaragua's official currency is the córdoba (NIO). US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas (hotels, restaurants, tour operators), but:

  • Change is often given in córdobas at unfavorable rates.
  • Small vendors, markets, taxis, and rural areas prefer/expect córdobas.
  • Torn or marked USD bills may be rejected.

Best practice: Exchange a modest amount at banks or authorized casas de cambio (avoid airport kiosks). Use córdobas for daily spending; keep crisp $20s/$50s for emergencies. ATMs dispense córdobas (check your bank's foreign fees).
