Although Puerto Ricans are United States citizens, Puerto Rico is not considered a state of the United States, but rather a U.S. territory.
Because Puerto Rico is not a U.S. state, it does not have voting representatives in the U.S. Congress and cannot vote in the U.S. presidential election. However, Puerto Ricans living in the 50 U.S. states can participate in the presidential election.
Puerto Ricans can:
- register to vote in the state where they reside.
- Cast their ballot for the candidate of their choice.
As U.S. citizens, Puerto Ricans have the same voting rights as any other U.S. citizen living in the 50 states.
