Venezuela was claimed as a Spanish colony from the 1520s and remained under Spanish rule until 1811, when it became part of the First Republic of Venezuela, which was later dissolved in 1821 and re-established in 1830 as an independent republic. Therefore, Venezuela has been an independent country for approximately 201 years since its re-establishment in 1830.
