How did Californians feel about being part of Mexico and Mexican rule?

The vast majority of Californians were Native Americans who, while not all directly ruled by Mexico, were subject to Mexican rule. Most of the Native American tribes in California had been relatively autonomous prior to the arrival of the Spanish and Mexican settlers, and as such, chaffed under Mexican rule. While the Spanish Franciscan missions had made converts of some of these tribes, the arrival of additional settlers and military incursions by the Mexican government put additional pressure on these groups. Eventually, this led to open revolts against Mexican rule, but these were ultimately unsuccessful and the tribes in question either assimilated into Mexican culture or were marginalized and their lands and resources taken by settlers.
