What is Altamira Spain famous for?

The Caves of Altamira in Santillana del Mar, Cantabria, northern Spain, are best known for their cave paintings. These prehistoric figures are some of the best-preserved cave art in the world. The caves were discovered in 1868 and opened to the public in 1880. The paintings are estimated to be between 18,000 and 35,000 years old, making them some of the oldest known works of art in the world. The main chamber of the caves is known as the "Great Ceiling" and contains over 300 paintings of bison, horses, deer, and other animals. The art is believed to have been created by the Solutrean people who inhabited the area during the Upper Paleolithic period. The Caves of Altamira have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
