Why is Mexican Independence Day?

Mexican Independence Day commemorates the beginning of Mexico's War of Independence. It is celebrated in Mexico on September 16.

The war began on September 16, 1810, when the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla led a group of rebels in a strike against Spanish colonial rule. The rebels captured several cities in central Mexico, but they were eventually defeated by Spanish forces. However, the war continued for another 11 years, and Mexico finally gained its independence from Spain in 1821.

Mexican Independence Day is a national holiday in Mexico, and it is celebrated with parades, festivals, and fireworks. In the United States, Mexican Independence Day is also celebrated by many Mexican-Americans, and it is often referred to as "El Dieciséis de Septiembre" (The Sixteenth of September).
