Why were the missils sent to Cuba?
The Soviet Union sent missiles to Cuba during October 1962 to strengthen its military position during the Cold War. The installation of these nuclear-capable missiles aimed to counter the presence of US nuclear weapons in several countries, particularly in Turkey and Italy, and to deter the United States from engaging in military action against Cuba. However, when the US discovered the presence of the missiles through reconnaissance flights, it demanded their immediate withdrawal, leading to the tense and politically dangerous standoff known as the Cuban Missile Crisis.
