Why did Brazil develop gashol?

Brazil developed gasohol as a result of the 1973 oil crisis.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) oil embargo placed a severe strain on Brazil's economy, which had been heavily dependent on imported oil. In response, the government of Brazil embarked on a comprehensive program to reduce reliance on imported oil. As part of this program, Brazil began to develop a domestic biofuels industry, including the production of gasohol.

Gasohol is a mixture of gasoline and ethanol. Ethanol can be produced from a variety of sources, including sugarcane, which is abundant in Brazil. By blending ethanol with gasoline, Brazil could reduce its dependence on imported oil while also creating a new domestic industry.

The development of gasohol in Brazil was a success. Today, Brazil is the second largest producer of ethanol in the world, after the United States. Gasohol is now widely used in Brazil and has helped the country to reduce its dependence on imported oil.
