Who were the ancestors of most Costa Ricans?

Most Costa Ricans are descended from Spanish settlers and indigenous peoples, specifically the Huetar and Chorotega peoples. During the colonial period, Spanish settlers intermingled with these indigenous groups, leading to a mix of European and Native American ancestry in the majority of Costa Ricans. It is estimated that around 65% of Costa Ricans have predominantly European ancestry and 20% have an admixture of European, African and indigenous ancestry, while the remaining 15% have mostly indigenous or African ancestry.
