Why does Chicago mean wild onion?

The city of Chicago is not named after the wild onion. Instead, its name is believed to come from a Native American word with various variations and spellings over the course of history, such as "Shikaakwa," meaning ''strong,'' or "Checagou,'' possibly meaning “strong garlic-smelling onion or wild leek plant” or "at the forks/meeting of the water.'' Additionally, there is debate between historians with varying theories for the origin of the name "Chicago.''
