Determine the time of year you hope to go for the buffalo. Winter buffalo have thicker hides -- something to consider if you wish to have the buffalo robe taxidermied.
Log onto the internet and enter a search for "Colorado buffalo hunts" and look through the available private ranches offering hunting services.
Choose between a "herd hunt" or a "fair-chase" hunt. A herd hunt is when you find the herd of buffalo, and simply shoot one out from the herd. A fair-chase hunt sees you riding horseback as you pick a large bull out from the herd and separate it form the herd. The bull will then disperse, leaving you to walk and stalk the animal.
Choose the rifle needed for your hunt and prepare it for the hunt. Many buffalo hunters use a .300 Win Mag for buffalo. If you do not want to fly with your rifle, ask the hunt outfitter if they have rifles for rent or if they are included in the hunt fee.
Make arrangements with your outfitter for any meat processing, shipping or hide tanning. The buffalo is a large animal; the meat will require proper butchering and preparation, freezing and shipping. If you choose not to keep the meat, find a suitable charity in the region and donate it.
