How to Hunt for Treasure on Padre Island

The legend of lost treasure on Padre Island began in the sixteenth century when several ships carrying loads of silver galleons crashed near the island. The legend expanded when, during the Civil War, the pro-Unionist Singer family buried approximately $62,000 in coins and jewelry in a sand dune now known as Money Hill. Over the centuries, pieces of these various fortunes have been discovered by interested treasure hunters. Today, people from all over the world attempt to find a piece of lost treasure and take part in the legend of Padre Island.

Instructions

  1. Finding The Treasure

    • 1

Locate treasure hunting hot spots on a map of northern or southern Padre Island. If they are not marked on the map, ask a local tour guide or tourist shop employee to point them out.

    • 2

Scan the ground and surrounding environment for metallic treasure using binoculars and a metal detector. Enjoy the scenery and take frequent breaks as successfully hunting for treasure requires patience and a large time commitment.

    • 3

If metal is detected, shovel away surrounding sand and debris to inspect the object.

    • 4

Contact local authorities about property and ownership rights if valuable treasure is found. Silver found on the island is technically property of the state and findings must legally be reported to local authorities for inspection.
