Destin attracts people of all types; it offers fishing, boating, shopping and golfing. In the fall, a series of concerts takes place along the coastline; this event is known as Autumn Tides and generally takes place between September and November. Shoppers will enjoy two malls, including the Silver Sands Factory Stores.
Apalachicola, established in 1831, was once one of the largest ports on the Gulf of Mexico. Today, it is a destination for history buffs, golfers and beach-goers. The streets are lined with historic buildings, and over 900 homes and buildings in Apalachicola are listed on the National Register District. Other nearby destinations include St. George Island State Park, Apalachicola National Forest and Tate's Hell State Forest.
Panama City, fondly known as the "Redneck Riviera" due to the many people from neighboring states that vacation here, is approximately 100 miles south of Tallahassee. It has a year-round average temperature of 74 degrees. It is bordered by both St. Andrews and Camp Helen state parks. People spending the day in Panama City can participate in the traditional beach activities such as water skiing and scuba diving. Other activities in the area include golfing, hiking and shopping.
As the capital of Florida, Tallahassee is home to the governor's and other state offices. Only 25 miles from the Gulf Coast, the city provides a small-town feel with the conveniences of an urban environment. Foodies will enjoy the freshest of seafood, while history buffs will like visiting the monuments and museums honoring the city's roles in establishing America and in the Civil War. Tallahassee is home to Florida State University, which hosts everything from sporting events for the FSU Seminoles to concerts, dances and other artistic performances.
