Things to Do on Bus Day Trips

With the high cost of transportation and lodging, more people are abandoning their vacations for "staycations". "Staycations" are a budget-friendly alternative to the traditional traveling adventure, featuring activities and destinations a lot closer to home. Many bus companies have picked up on the trend and offer ideas for things to do on your next day trip.
  1. Stable Attractions

    • Take the bus to a museum or zoo. Public transportation lines in big cities are designed to increase access to these sites, making it easy for you to attend one or more events. While these locations are not necessarily exotic, they can prove to be a fun, educational expedition for families and large groups. Some of these attractions even offer discounts for visitors traveling by bus. For example, the San Francisco Zoo offers a $1 discount on admission for taking public transportation to the zoo.

    Seasonal Attractions

    • Circuses, concerts, plays and fairs function on seasonal schedules. For the most part, these venues are located on normal bus routes, however some events are further away and provide a shuttle bus for visitors. For example, the White River Amphitheater in Auburn, Washington offers a shuttle service to the nearby Supermall. Visitors can shop all day and see a concert that night. And Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey has bus service from New York and New Jersey.

    Nature

    • Indoor gardens provide year-round entertainment

The city can be loud, crowded and confining. A bus trip can provide welcome relief from the urban chaos. Visit a community garden, nature preserve or campground such as the Botanical Gardens in Brooklyn, New York or the Chicago Botanic Garden just north of the windy city.

    All-In-One Resort

    • Take a day trip to an all-in-one resort

Escape the quiet life and visit an all-inclusive getaway such as Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. You don't have to book a room to have a good day trip. Watch a show, play at the casino, have a nice dinner and then go home. Resort destinations often have incoming and outgoing bus service from national carriers like Greyhound and Peter Pan. Foxwoods has direct bus routes from eight states. Other resorts include Mohegan Sun, also in Connecticut, Atlantic City, New Jersey and Legoland, California.
