Visit the Megabus or Greyhound websites to find tickets to Chicago from your location. While Greyhound will allow you to book one ticket to Chicago from many destinations and include transfers within the schedule, Megabus sells tickets for one bus at a time. If you are not traveling from a city that has a bus going to Chicago, you will need to book two or more separate buses to complete your journey.
Enter the dates you would like to travel and whether you require a one-way or a round-trip ticket.
Confirm your itinerary and pay for your trip. While you can choose to have tickets sent to you or pick them up at the bus station for Greyhound, Megabus tickets are virtual. Write down your confirmation number to show to the driver upon embarkation.
Go to the bus station at least 30 minutes prior to your departure time to board and situate yourself on the bus. Greyhound buses do not require advance purchase. You can buy your ticket at the bus station before departing instead of reserving in advance, if you like.
Check one piece of luggage, if you need to, on board a Greyhound or Megabus. You can carry an additional small piece with you in the bus. Either bus company may accept an additional piece of checked luggage if space allows, but do not count on a second piece, even if you are willing to pay. If the bus is full, your luggage will have to stay behind.
Disembark in Chicago when you have reached your destination. Some buses may continue on from Chicago, so be sure to listen for your stop once you reach the city.
