How to Travel by Bus in Texas

Bus travel is an ideal way to see the Lone Star State and discover its multitude of cities, cultures and terrains without breaking the bank. The state has several bus companies that provide service throughout the state, connecting its far flung cities to each other. Find your way from Dallas to Corpus Christi, from San Antonio to Lubbock, and all points in between by traveling the state by bus.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide which bus line is appropriate for your starting and ending points. While Greyhound is the largest and most popular North American carrier, Megabus, Amtrak and El Expreso all offer bus services in Texas as well. Check to see which lines serve your departure and destination cities, and determine which have the cheapest prices if you are traveling on a budget.

    • 2

Contact the bus line by calling, visiting their website or visiting a local office to reserve your ticket. Most accept cash in person or major credit cards for all booking methods. While some buses allow you to purchase tickets on the bus, it is best to book in advance to guarantee a seat.

    • 3

Print out your ticket at home, or elect to pick it up at the bus station the day of your trip. Some companies, such as Megabus, will simply give you a reservation number you must show to the bus driver. Write this number down in a safe place.

    • 4

Arrive at your departure site or station before the stated departure time. Greyhound prefers passengers to arrive an hour before departure, especially those checking luggage, with boarding starting 15 minutes prior to departure. Megabus typically boards 15 minutes prior to departure.

    • 5

Pack appropriately. Most buses will have undercarriage storage for large pieces of luggage. Bring a carry-on to keep with you for items such as laptops, snacks, blankets, headphones and books.
