Visit one of St. Louis' museums on a snowy day. Kids can get in a bit of education even though school is canceled, and adults will get more out of a museum than a day on the couch. The Eugene Field House and St. Louis Toy Museum features toys and books from as far back as the 1790s, as well as quilts, furniture and other pieces of history collected by the museum. If art is your fancy, visit the Saint Louis Art Museum, which is home to African, American, contemporary, American Indian and modern art. Families can receive a family-friendly museum tour or participate in a class or workshop. Adults can attend an art lecture or take a class and learn about the museum's exhibits. Learn about all things science at the Saint Louis Science Center. The museum features a planetarium, Civil War medicine exhibit, bodies and brains exhibit and a discovery room for younger children.
For an adults-only snow day, visit one of St. Louis' many breweries and warm up with a relaxing beer. Anheuser-Busch offers free tours of its St. Louis brewery, which include free samples of Budweiser-brand beers. Visit the Schlafly Beer brewery, a small batch brewery that has been in operation since 1991. Square One Brewery and Distillery is yet another option for local, hand-crafted beers. Square One features at least a dozen beers all made in its local brewery as well as wheat wine.
Forest Park is an adventure all its own, even in winter. Visit the warm and colorful Jewel Box, an indoor greenhouse that is alive with flowers and plants year-round. Put on a coat and some gloves and head over to the Steinberg skating rink for an afternoon of outdoor ice skating. If you get hungry after your turn around the rink you can get a bite to eat at the Steinberg Cafe. If you want more of a workout, grab your cross-country skis and glide through the snow on the park's nearly 1,300 acres.
If you want some action on your snow day, take in a hockey game at the Scottrade Center and watch the St. Louis Blues. If you want to get in on the action yourself, visit Hidden Valley, a snow-lovers paradise located in the suburbs of St. Louis. Hidden Valley is home to 30 acres of skiable terrain with ski runs for beginners to experts, a terrain park and ski lesson center. If you want to ride down a hill of snow on a tube or sled instead of skis, St. Louis has dozens of hills that are ideal for sledding, including steep hills for big kids and adults and small hills for little ones.
