How to Enjoy Maui

The island of Maui, one of six Hawaiian islands, is a year-round paradise. You may be tempted just to relax on the beach (Maui has 42 miles of beaches), but you'd be missing out on a whole lot of recreational opportunities that you won't find anywhere else.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide when to go. While the months between May and October are considered the "summer season," the weather varies little from season to season (daytime highs are generally between 81 and 84 degrees F in winter and 85 and 88 degrees F in summer).

    • 2

Choose a place to stay. Your options are almost endless here, from world-class resorts to timeshare condos to vacation rentals to bed-and-breakfast inns. The most popular beachside lodgings are in Kaanapali, Wailea, Kapalua and Kihei.

    • 3

Fly in. There aren't many other options for transportation to Maui. The island's two airports are Kahului Airport and Kapalua Airport. Check with your travel agent for the best option.

    • 4

Figure out how you're going to get around on the island. You can rent a car, jeep or motorcycle for personal transportation, or rely on tour companies to take you to the island's main attractions.

    • 5

See the historical sites. Many of these are centered in Lahaina, which was the first capital of the Hawaiian Islands. Here you'll find the evidence of early missionaries, whalers and Hawaiian kings and queens. Pick up a map or tourist guide and browse.

    • 6

Experience Mother Nature. Don't miss Haleakala National Park, Maui Zoological and Botanic Gardens and the Kanaha Bird Sanctuary. A stop at the Hawaii Nature Center in Iao Valley will provide a great introduction to the island's flora and fauna.

    • 7

Hit the water. Parasailing, sailing, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, fishing, rafting - and especially snorkeling and diving - are popular pastimes. Lessons, equipment rental and guided excursions are available.

    • 8

Explore by land. See the island on horseback, mountain bike or on foot. Ranger-led hikes are available at Haleakala National Park, or you can rent a bike or horse and explore on your own.

    • 9

Play golf. Maui has several championship courses, including the excellent Kaanapali and Makena courses. Golf packages are readily available.

    • 10

Take pictures and video. This is a vacation you'll want to remember.
