Choose a time to go. Summer is the busy season for families, while golfers generally prefer spring and fall. December and January are the slowest months, but the mild weather makes Hilton Head a great destination even at this time of year.
Decide how to get there. You can fly in to the airport at Savannah, GA, then rent a car and drive about an hour to the island, or fly directly into the Hilton Head Island Airport.
Choose your lodging. From world-class resorts to condos and vacation homes, you have a lot to choose from. If you have a special interest in golf or tennis, look for a resort that offers attractive golf or tennis packages.
Play golf. Hilton Head is known for its championship courses, and there are more than 20 golf courses on the island. If being an observer is your thing, plan your trip around one of the PGA tournaments.
Play tennis. There are more than 200 tennis courts on the island, and many resorts feature hard, clay and grass surfaces. Spectators can watch professional tournament play, and should check the local calendar for a list of upcoming events.
Rent a bike. A good percentage of vacationers choose to get around the island on a bike. There are miles of bike trails, and since the sandy beaches are hard, you can ride right up to the water's edge.
Play on the water. Watch dolphins and sea turtles, go kayaking, sunset cruising, fishing, surfing, diving or sailing.
Appreciate the arts. Hilton Head offers everything from art galleries to performing arts. Check the schedule at the Self Family Arts Center for information on upcoming art exhibits and performances.
Enjoy everything else the island has to offer. From sampling luscious seafood to checking out nearby outlet malls, there is much to do besides playing golf or tennis. Explore the island and surrounding areas to make the most of your vacation.
