Why were the Indians brought to mission San Luis Rey De Francia?

The mission Indians at San Luis Rey were not "brought" there; those living in the surrounding mountains and along the nearby coast came, often at great peril or at sacrifice because they understood its importance and significance as more than an educational or spiritual center. When word spread during the late months of 1798 that a major church with a resident padre would at last open, they began assembling from widely separated territories.
