When did spanish first come to Mexico?

Spanish explorers first arrived in what is now Mexico in 1519. Hernán Cortés and his men landed on the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula and quickly made their way inland, defeating the Aztec Empire in 1521. Spanish became the official language of Mexico during the colonial period, which lasted until 1821.
