Luiseño Attire at Mission San Luis Rey de Francia
Traditional Clothing of the Luiseño People
At Mission San Luis Rey de Francia (founded 1798), the Luiseño (Payómkawichum) people wore a blend of traditional and mission-influenced garments.
Men's Attire
- Breechcloths – Basic lower garment.
- Ponchos – For warmth, often woven from rabbit skin or plant fibers.
- Leggings – Protection for legs in brush.
- Moccasins – Soft leather footwear.
Women's Attire
- Skirts – Made from shredded bark (often willow or juniper) or deerskin.
- Shawls/Capes – Rabbit skin or woven fiber for warmth.
- Dresses/Tunics – Longer, fuller garments, sometimes with fringe.
Mission life introduced European textiles (wool, cotton) and styles, but traditional materials and forms persisted, especially for daily work and ceremonies.
