Why is the orchid national flower of Venezuela?

The national flower of Venezuela is not an orchid. It is the Cattleya mossiae, a species of orchid, that is also known as the Flor de Mayo (May Flower). The Cattleya mossiae was declared the national flower of Venezuela in 1951 because of its beauty and abundance in the country.
