Quiet Secluded Beaches in Mexico

A warm Mexican beach is the perfect escape from chilly winters up north but crowds at the well-known haunts can be daunting. Most people have heard the names: Acapulco, Cozumel, Cancun. Nice places all but not the ticket when you're in the market for quiet and seclusion. Fortunately, Mexico has hundreds of miles of beachfront real estate to choose from and the vast majority is a completely different world compared to the Big Three.
  1. Pacific Coast

    • The western coast of Mexico between the more familiar cities of Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta is dotted with small fishing villages and towns that boast some of the nicest Pacific Ocean vistas to be found anywhere. San Blas is one such destination. This town has seen the rise of ecotourism. With only 12,000 residents, you can hit the beach without fear of a high rise condo or hotel to mar the natural view. No need to rent a car. Everything in the village is within walking distance, though shopping is limited. This is not the place to go if you're into high octane nightlife and dozens of whirlwind activities. The beaches at San Blas are for relaxing, swimming, catching a wave or two if you like to surf, but primarily turning back the clock to a simpler time.

    Southern Coast

    • The village of Zipolite would be a good choice for a quiet beach vacation. Rent a hammock and sleep right on the beach if you want. This is the very definition of relaxation, with the only sound lulling you to sleep the rhythmic splash of water against sand. Another Mexican beach town on the southern coast is Mazunte, where the concept of amenities is almost unheard of but the breathtaking scenery more than makes up the difference. Swim, snorkel or take a boat tour to watch dolphins and turtles in their natural habitat.

    Yucatan

    • Though this famous peninsula is well-traveled by Mexicans and the rest of the world, you can still find a quiet, secluded beach or two if you know where to look. Puerto Telchac is one such town, and offers swimming, snorkeling, fishing and whale watching. A mere 35 miles away sits the more sizable city of Merida, in case you develop a craving for spending some time in finer restaurants or taking in historical sites.
