On December 21, 1799 between six to eight in the morning an 8.0 earthquake occurred 85 km S of Caracas with at least over 171 casualties in Venezuela but possibly close to 3000 due to aftershocks and landslides that followed it .
The area surrounding San Luis has many major earth-fault systems that makes the city prone to seismic activity, with earthquakes as strong as eight Richter scale magnitudes recorded historically (1766, 1812, 1881).
