Earthquake at San Luis Rey de Francia: 1799, Not 1878

The major earthquake near San Luis Rey de Francia occurred on December 21, 1799 (not 1878), between 6–8 AM. An estimated 8.0 magnitude quake struck 85 km south of Caracas, Venezuela, causing at least 171 confirmed casualties (possibly up to 3,000 including aftershocks and landslides).

The region around San Luis has active fault systems capable of producing magnitude 8 quakes, with historical events recorded in 1766, 1812, and 1881.
