Cozumel is nearly 240 square miles in size. It's 29 miles long and eight miles wide, with a large portion of its area sitting directly on the water.
Tropical birds---such as parrots, white egrets, macaws and blue warblers---are native to the island. Deer, coati and lizards also live on the island.
In 1961, Jacques Cousteau visited the island and referred to it as one of the best places in the world for scuba diving. Today, the area has its own underwater marine park, created to protect the marine life.
The rainy season lasts from May to September. Strong windstorms hit in the late fall and early winter.
Cozumel accepts any foreign driver's license, which means drivers can rent cars in the area. In addition, travelers can drive mopeds or take a taxi.
