Lord of the Rings Tours in New Zealand

New Zealand and Middle Earth became synonymous when Peter Jackson filmed J.R.R.Tolkien's epic trilogy, The Lord of Rings (LOTR), in the later 1990s and early 2000s. Filming covered many parts of the hugely scenic little country and visitor interest boomed. So have LOTR specialty tours, which center on Queenstown in the South Island.
  1. Red Carpet Tours

    • Red Carpet's tour is 12 days, with no experience spared. It covers every site, from Hobbiton just south of Auckland, to Mt. Doom in the center of the North Island, on to Helms' Deep near Wellington, to Edoras in Canterbury in the South Island and many locations in the Southern Lakes and Fiordland. Throw in side-visits, such as Jackson's film studios (Weta) and rafting on rivers where Orc abounded, and you have a complete LOTR experience. Splitting the tour (i.e. just one island) will halve the cost, which for 12 days is USD$3,200 (as of 2010) twin/share.Tours leave Auckland once a month.
