Exchange rates are calculated by banks and other financial institutions. You can look up the exchange rate on websites or calculate how much your U.S. dollars are worth when converted to New Zealand dollars (see Resources).
You can often exchange money at banks, counters in airports and shopping centers. These exchange services will display the exchange rate that that particular location provides. Note that this can vary greatly from the exchange rates published by banks because these exchangers might charge extra fees for conversion or might be taking advantage of their advantageous location.
One of the best ways to withdraw money in New Zealand is to use an ATM. This will ensure that you get an exchange rate that is set by your bank, rather than a money changer on the street. Most major card issuers will allow you to withdraw money internationally if you notify your bank that you will be traveling. Be sure to ask about any fees associated with drawing foreign currency. Because this is often a per transaction fee, it is best to make larger transactions rather than several small withdrawals.
If you are paying with cash, you must use the local currency in New Zealand (unless otherwise posted). However, most businesses and restaurants will accept your credit card.
