How did Staten Island become part of New York?

In 1664 the English captured the colony from the Dutch who called the island "Staaten Eylandt" (State Island) after the Staten Generaal, the States-General of the Netherlands. After the 1664 capture, the island was renamed "Yorkshire". When news reached England of this action, the King changed the name to "Richmond". In 1683 the name was again changed to "Staten Island".

Staten Island was originally considered part of New Jersey. In 1687 the Governor of New York gained jurisdiction over the island. Although many Staten Island land patents list both New York and New Jersey, the island has been administered by New York since that date.
