The Tongva (historically called Gabrieleño) are the original inhabitants of the Los Angeles Basin, San Fernando Valley, and Santa Monica Bay. They are one of four groups within the Gabrieleño-Tongva nation, alongside the Kizh, Gabrieleños, and Fernandeños.
Over 1,500 Tongva people live in California today, with others dispersed across the United States. The tribe actively preserves its language, culture, and sacred sites amid urban sprawl.
