Giovanni da Verrazzano & New York: Clearing Up the Narragansett Bay Confusion

Two corrections needed:

  1. No "Narragansett Bay" in NY: Narragansett Bay is in Rhode Island. Verrazzano *did* anchor there in 1524 (naming it "Refugio"), making contact with Narragansett & Wampanoag people.
  2. Verrazzano in NY: Earlier in that 1524 voyage, he entered Upper New York Bay (naming it "Santa Margarita"), anchoring near the Narrows (now Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge). He encountered Lenape people but did not explore far inland.

So: Verrazzano visited both locations on the same voyage, but they are distinct bodies of water ~150 miles apart.
