Rules for Travel From USA to Cuba

There are rules in place for travelers who want to visit Cuba from the United States. A visa is necessary and as of 2010, non-U.S. medical insurance is required for all visitors.
  1. Licensed Travels

    • Cuban regulations require U.S. travelers to be licensed in order to travel to Cuba, which means you must have an approved reason. Visiting a close relative, traveling for journalistic opportunities and those needing to travel to Cuba for work are all acceptable reasons. According to the U.S. Department of State, transactions related to tourist travel are not licensable.

    Visas

    • When traveling to Cuba from the U.S., travelers need to hold the appropriate visa for their stay. While Cuba issues visas at the port of entry, the Department of State recommends that all travelers hold the appropriate type of visa and authorization documents from Cuban authorities (if applicable) before their arrival.

    Insurance

    • The Cuban government announced that from May 2010, all tourists traveling to Cuba are required to have non-U.S. medical insurance during their stay in the country Those that do not have this will be sold temporary medical policies. Some AIDS/HIV restrictions also exist for travelers to Cuba. Temporary medical insurance is sold by foreign companies approved by the Cuban government.
