North Florida Deer Rut Timing

North Florida white-tailed deer have two distinct rut periods:

Primary Rut: Mid-June to Early July

  • Peak breeding activity for most does.
  • Bucks highly visible, aggressive, chasing, grunting, rattling.
  • Best hunting window.

Secondary Rut: November to January

  • Less intense; involves unbred does cycling again.
  • Can offer opportunities but less predictable.

Why This Timing?

Florida's subtropical climate and lack of severe winter shift the rut earlier than northern states (where November is peak). Photoperiod triggers are modulated by local conditions.

Hunting Implications

  • Summer rut = heat, bugs, foliage; early mornings/late evenings best.
  • Bucks less cautious, more vocal (grunts, snort-wheezes).
  • Rattling/grunting calls very effective.
  • Check FWC regulations for zone-specific dates, bag limits, license/permit requirements.

Always verify current Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rules before hunting.
